Welcome
How is technology influencing your religious and spiritual practices?
Help our research. Take our survey.
Help our research. Take our survey.
We hope to gain more knowledge about how technology influences spiritual and religious practices.
Hello! I’m Tonya Miller-Hire, a postgraduate researcher at the University of Birmingham, UK, in the School of Philosophy, Theology, and Religion and the Department of Psychology and Religion. I am the Principal Investigator, and my advisor is Dr. Carissa Sharp.
Our study involves a 35-minute online survey and an optional follow-up interview or open-response survey.
We investigate how people use technology in their spiritual and religious activities. We explore their perceptions of self-discovery, connection, and transcendence, as well as their technological habits, such as devices used and frequency. Our goal is to better understand the evolving religious and spiritual landscape in the digital era.
Please reach us at txm272@student.bham.ac if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Participants must be at least 18 years of age, raised in the USA, have a Christian background (although maybe not currently Christian), and have experience with online religious and spiritual activities and technologies.
There are no expected risks for participants. However, religion and spirituality can be sensitive subjects. If you feel uncomfortable with any question, you can choose not to answer it and can withdraw at any time.
The study's title is "Comparative Studies in Traditional and Nontraditional Approaches to Online Worship."

Yes. If you complete only the 35-minute survey and do not opt for a follow-up interview, we will not collect any personally identifiable information. If you opt for the follow-up interview, only members of the research team will have access to data that can be traced back to you. All data is encrypted and stored on password-protected computers, and backed-up to secure University of Birmingham servers. Any personal data is kept only for the project's duration and then responsibly destroyed.
The findings from this project will be used in several academic and media articles and presentations. All data presented will be anonymized. Anonymized datasets will be made publicly available according to open research practices.
Participants recruited through social media, word-of-mouth, and direct outreach will not be monetarily compensated. If the minimum sample size is not reached within the allotted timeframe, Amazon Mechanical Turk respondents will be invited to participate for $10.
